Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce/Cox Communications Unveil Economic Outlook 2010

PHOENIX – Yesterday, the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and Cox Communications unveiled their annual research and analysis forecasting for the Valley’s economic health in 2010. “The good news is that we are coming out of the recession,” stated Elliott Pollack, CEO of Elliott D. Pollack & Company. “But, it will be due more to a swing in inventories than a change in the basic dynamics of the consumer.”

The Economic Outlook 2010 study was compiled in August using data from various sources including Cox 7 Digital Cable customers who responded to interactive poll questions via their cable remote controls. The results show Phoenicians feel the following:

• On Arizona’s Elected Officials - 59 percent believe Arizona’s elected officials are inferior to other states’ leaders, up 20 percentage points from last year.

• On the Economy - 72 percent expect the economy to be the same or improve in 2010.

• On Stimulus Funds in Arizona - 40 percent believe the funds to be a positive impact, while 43 percent expected no impact and 17 percent expecting a negative impact.

The Economic Outlook 2010 event featured four presenters of varied expertise. Dr. Angel Cabrera, president of Thunderbird School of Global Management, kicked off the event by addressing the international perspective of globalization. Beckie Holmes of Cox Communications, presented on the national economy and what we can expect to see come 2010. Elliott Pollack provided a detailed analysis of the current commercial and residential market in Phoenix and how the valley compares against other markets in the nation. Secretary of State, Ken Bennett, rounded out the program with a presentation on the state budget.

“The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce is proud to be able to provide a venue like Economic Outlook 2010, which brings the community together to hear vital economic information from a diverse line-up of experts. Although much of what we heard today is still negative – all indicators point to an end to the recession and in the direction of a slow gradual recovery,” stated Todd Sanders, president and CEO. “The data shared today illustrates that this was indeed a world-wide recession which severely impacted Arizona. Our job going forward is to rebuild the economy, mindful of difficult lessons we have learned.”

This Economic Outlook event provided valley professionals with up-to-the-minute information about the changing dynamics of the economy. Information shared at the event pointed to the global impact of the economic growth as foreign markets such as the Euro Zone and China are recovering.

The complete survey results, as well as PowerPoint presentations and video from the event, are available online at www.phoenixchamber.com/EO2010.
